interpretation of Poem
The above is a facsimile of the design used on the title page in the original ( and probably the only ) edition of Whitney's Poem in praise of Sir Francis Drake. The poem is dedicated to Sir Francis' companion - in - arms, Sir Richard Drake, born at Ashe House, Musbury, Devon. The verses composed by Whitney, in 1587, have no particular or artistic merit, but they are of much personal and historical interest; one of many tributes to Sir Francis Drake overlooked by all his modern biographers; and further of note as linking his name with that of Sir Richard Drake, a younger brother of Sir Bernard Drake, of Ashe House, Musbury, Devon.
A History of the Drake Family of Churchstanton,Teignmouth and Australia, - by Sophia Daphne Drake. Special Australian Edition,1950, privately published.
