What is this list?

This is a discussion area for anyone who has an interest in the surname DRAKE and it's many spelling variations. If you are interested in exchanging information on your DRAKE ancestors or ask questions about them - this is the place for you.
Welcome aboard Cousin. Please remember that we are each guests in each other's homes. Try to remember your "company manners." Pull off your shoes, grab a cup of coffee, and join us for what I hope will be a pleasant visit. You will get out of this list exactly what you put into it. If you only want to cruise and read, you are welcome to but I think you'll get more enjoyment if you jump in and take an activerole. Please send any questions, comments or complaints to me, in a private message.

My name is Barb Marshall marchado@pacbell.net . I'm the "owner" of this list. That means I'm responsible for keeping it running as smoothly as possible and setting some rules for its operation. This message is long. Don't be intimidated by that. If you will print it out and study it, it will be very helpful to you. If you glance through it and then delete it, you may have problems. Let's make the list a pleasant experience for everyone:

Your responsibilities

That's right, you have some responsibilities, too.
There aren't many and they aren't painful, but very necessary to keep the list running smoothly for all of us.

1. KEEP THIS MESSAGE. I recommend printing it out and putting the paper where you can find it (tacked to the wall above your computer).
Make a backup copy of it on a floppy and keep it in a safe place where you can find it easily so that you can refer to it often. Files on a hard disk get lost. So do paper and floppies but we have to try something.

2. READ THIS MESSAGE. Yes, it's a little long, but you don't have to memorize it (that's why you're saving it). It's hard to make it short and tell you what you need to know.

3. DON'T BE AFRAID OF ALL THIS. Using a computer is a little harder than just knowing where the power switch is, but any one can do this with a little effort and by following instructions.

4. FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS - WORD BY WORD, LETTER BY LETTER. If you leave something out of a command or put something extra in, it probably won't work.

5. IF YOU DECIDE TO LEAVE THE LIST, MAKE SURE YOUR NAME IS REMOVED (more on this below). The server that sends you this list handles thousands of messages a day. If your address becomes "bad" (for instance, you quit AOL but we think you're still there) then we start getting bounced messages. We get thousands a day now. Please don't make it worse. *RootsWeb will bounce you off the list if they receive more than four bounces (I think). Please contact me if you are having mail problems. If you are bounced - it's not because you are no longer wanted on the list or that we just don't like you. It is because of the extra work each bounce causes. If you are bounced, send me a note and I will get you back on again as quickly and smoothly as possible.

For those of you who would prefer Digests over individual messages unsubscribe to the DRAKE-L list and subscribe to the DRAKE-D list. (Remember, DRAKE-L is NO DIGEST and DRAKE-D is digest.)

7. DO NOT FLAME PEOPLE (SEND ARGUMENTATIVE OR CRITICAL MESSAGES) ON THE LIST.
IF YOU ARE FLAMED, DO NOT RESPOND VIA THE LIST!!!! I try to read all of the messges that come in and will send a private note to anyone flaming. If you disregard that note and flame a second time, you will be automatically off the list. So far, everyone has been great and we haven't had any flaming. If you see something you don't like on the list, send me a note and we'll see what we can do about it. Feel free to use your delete key. It works.

8. PLEASE STAY ON TOPIC
Again, this is a discussion of our DRAKE ancestors. Please stay close to that subject. (Keep in mind that history is an important part of genealogy. Current topics usually are not.)

9. DON'T SEND ATTACHMENTS!
Most email programs can send attachments (attached files). Don't send these to the list. (Some programs will send a small attachment with your signature or something like that and you can't shut that off that's okay.) This isn't a problem for the mail server, but some attachments can cause some subscribers' machines to lock up,make them lose all their mail, even crash their hard drive! If you want to send something to the list - such as a news article - send a note to the list, telling everyone what it is and suggest they contact you privately for it. A GEDCOM file can be a huge attachment; so can an encoded graphics file (if you don't know what those are, you probably won't be sending them, but a lot of you will understand these terms). Again, if you want to share it with the list, send a note first and anyone who wants it can send you a private email requesting it.
Are you getting mail? If you're reading this, then you've signed up for this list. IF YOU DO NOT START RECEIVING MAIL SOON, send me a note and we will try to correct it.
I'm having a problem
Send me a message, but be specific. I can't help if you just say, "I'm having a problem, help me." Tell me what it is. Tell me what you did or tried to do. If you received some kind of error message, send it to me.
Do you have a web page you would like us to know about? Does it have any DRAKES on it? Send us the url and tell us briefly what your page is about. If it has any DRAKE connections, you might want to link it up with pages other members have.
