AAV SIGNS DESIGN GROUP
I would like to announce that we have successfully concluded negotiations with SMS Management & Technology Ltd for the purchase of Sydney based visual effects and animation group, GMD (formerly Garner McLennan Design).
GMD was established in 1985 as Sydneyâs first dedicated design-based visual effects and animation company. Today GMD is the Asia Pacificâs most highly awarded design and visual effects company. Award winning broadcast design projects include the Animal Planet News titles for Discovery Channel, the Channel Nine Odyssey "Comedy" Promo, the Odyssey promos for Channel Nine and the Nickelodeon "Play It" Promo and the NRL 2000 titles. Commercials include the award winning Supercoat 'Dog Tired', Sega ÎDreamcastâ, Dr Pepper, Cable & Wireless, Boing Aeronautical, Nokia, Bank of China, Reebok, CMGI, KPMG, Cable & Wireless and the Telstra ÎAbacusâ campaign. One of GMDâs major television projects was the design and production of 3D animation and VFX for the first series of Farscape, a 22 episode science fiction series for the Jim Henson Company and Hallmark Entertainment. The Farscape project marked the largest and most complex vfx project ever produced in Australia, with the series reaching No.1 on the Sci-Fi Channel in the USA.
GMDâs VFX capabilities are held in high regard in the feature film area, particularly on the international stage with a number of A-grade feature films including Phillip Noyce's 'Rabbit Proof Fence' and 'The Quiet American' and 'Lord of the Rings - Fellowship of the Rings'.
Whilst GMD will operate as an independent entity within AAVâs Digital Pictures Network, Jeff Oliver will head the management team as General Manager of both Digital Pictures Sydney and GMD.
I would like you to join me in welcoming the talented GMD team to the AAV Group. We are committed to nurturing and expanding GMDâs culture of design integrity and giving the team every opportunity to increase the companyâs profile in the global market.
The acquisition of GMD follows on from the recent announcement of a proposed merger between AAV Australia and ISIS Communications, and signals the first step in a major expansion phase for the AAV Australia Group.

Ted Gregory
