A SEQUEL TO A PERSERVERING RECRUIT

I was delighted to read of EDWARD (TED) PATMORE in the March 1997 issue of our gazette,I also had this information having a family connection. EDWARD ERNEST PATMORE was a son of JOSEPH PATMORE and EMILY ELIZABETH BURTON.I knew little of JOSEPH PATMORE but on checking the BDM,found one TITUS PATMORE who married ROSE FORBES in 1854 and had children JOSEPH b 1855,ROSANNA b 1857,SARAH JANE b 1858 and d 1860.ROSE PATMORE also died in 1860-parents unknown.
The Maitland Mercury,3rd July 1873 stated in the Singleton District Court news "JOSEPH PATMORE unindentured apprentice to WILLIAM WADDELL,Jnr,charged his master with ill treating him. He had been apprenticed four years from the Randwick Asylum. He claimed he had been made to workwith a bad leg and had been ordered off the place three weeks ago. MR WADDELL said he was a perfect nuisance and did not know what to do with him.The case was dismissed."
JOSEPH PATMORE married EMILY ELIZABETH BURTON in 1880 at Singleton. EMILY was a daughter of THOMAS EDGAR BURTON and SARAH FULLER,who had arrived in the the colony aboard the "ANNA MARIA" on 25th June 1857.EMILY was born at "MUNDEWA" on 25th May 1860.In the early 1860’s THOMAS BURTON is known to have worked for MORRISON and CHRISTIAN of John Street, Singleton as a carpenter.During the 1860’s he settled at WATTLE PONDS, the creek running through his property and where he established an orchard. SARAH BURTON died on the 18th October 1907 at Dunolly and was buried in the Wesleyan Methodist Cemetery,Queen Stree,Singleton. There is no headstone. THOMAS BURTON died on the 8th May 1920 and was buried beside his daughter,MINNIE JANE METTAM in the Methodist Cemetery,Quirindi. THOMAS EDGAR BURTON Jnr,born at Wattle Ponds on 13th June 1869,married my father-in-law’s sister,MARIA LOUISE CLAYWORTH in 1899 at Singleton. JOSEPH and EMILY PATMORE had one daughter and five sons:ROSA EVELINE b 1881; JOSEPH STANLEY b 1882; BERTRAND H.b 1885;EDWARD ERNEST b.1887;FREDERICK C. b 1889;GEORGE N.b.1891.I have a feeling that JOSEPH and EMILY may have parted.EMILY PATMORE died in 1927 at KYOGLE.
On the 1912 Electoral Roll EDWARD ERNEST PATMORE is shown as a selector at Goorangoola.Following his war service and marriage to VERA OLGA TARRANT at Milton Regis Church,Kent,England in 1917 his wife arrived here at Easter 1919.They had a daughter OLGA who was born in 1920 and died in 1922.A son,REGINALD was born on 1st April 1923 and both mother and son died that same day.VERA PATMORE was aged 30 years. At that time they were living at Boundary Street,Singleton and soon after the loss of his wife and baby son,TED PATMORE sold up his household effects and moved.Nothing more of him is known in this area. A sad family ending for our perservering recruit.
On checking the "Between the Wars" cdrom, EDWARD PATMORE remarried in 1927 at Gloucester to OLIVE CLAIRE BLEAKLEY, his cousin, who was born in 1897,a daughter of ANDREW BLEAKLEY and ELLEN ANN BURTON (the eldest sister of EDWARD'S mother). Edwards life was still plagued with sadness and losses as it is registered that Edward and Olive lost a daughter, Ronita Pearl in 1936 and the place of residence was stated as Annandale.
