He was in the Commissariat of the British Army and was stationed in WA from 1830-1848 and in Hobart from 1848-1850. He married Louisa Purkis in Perth, and had 5 children - John, Louisa Maria, Charlotte Augusta Dring, Emily Caroline, & Laura Mary.
