From: Lisa Graham Date: Thursday, 23 January 2003 8:20 AM Diary & Notebook of James Auld 1765-1789 The following transcription was copied from the "Diary & Notebook of James Auld (1765-89) as found in the William Alexander Smith Papers (Box 32) in the manuscript collection of the manuscript Department, William R. Perkins Library at Duke University, Durham NC. The diary is said to have his own handwriting and was in possession of Gen. W.A. Smith of Ansonville, Anson Co., N.C. before it was made a part of the Duke U. Collection. The diary is unique in showing the migration of a prominent lawyer and his family (eventually) from Dorchester Co., Maryland, in 1765 to HALIFAX, North Carolina, where he served as Clerk Of Court for Halifax County. A Bonus item in this Diary is the collection of fees for marriage licenses in 1765 and 1766 In Halifax County, NC and the recording of the names of the brides and grooms and the dates of the license. In a different handwriting- James AULD d. 8 May 1782 wife Rosanna d. 11 Nov. 1792 Anson Co.
