The following is the latest on Thomas Drake of Weymouth MA and his sister
Elizabeth Drake. This is the latest update to date, and you may post it on
the website, if you desire, for all to see and possibly update their
ancestral records.
Have a good day.
Earl.
THOMAS DRAKE, WEYMOUTH, MA, B. CA. 1635, D. 1692.
The Drake Family Genealogy, Louis Stoughton Drake, Boston, 1896 states that
Thomas's father and mother were William and Margaret (Westover) Drake, and
he, Thomas, followed his relative John Drake, with his sisters, Joane and
Elizabeth to America (Drake, p 2).
No evidence has been found as written in the Drake Genealogy to date,
indicating that William and Margaret (Westover) Drake of co. Devon, were the
parents of Thomas and Elizabeth Drake who arrived in America in the mid
1600's. Some of the information here was provided by the most helpful
assistance of 2 individual researchers in England, who had no ancestry
connections with the Drakes listed. For that I am most deeply greatful and
appreciative, and without which this search would not have progressed as
quickly as I anticipated.
Thomas Drake was born in England, arrived in America before 1657, married
twice, lived and died in 1692 in Weymouth, MA, and all his children were born
there.
Elizabeth Drake, sister of Thomas Drake-NEHGR, vol 98, Jul 1944, pp 281. "It
is true that Thomas 1 Drake of Weymouth had a sister Elizabeth who married
Ezekiel Hamlin of Boston.---'will of Ezekiel---mentions "my brother Thomas
Drake of Weymouth". (Suffolk County Probate 8:4) " It appears that Elizabeth
and Ezekiel had 4 children, all born in MA.
Joan/Joane Drake- NEHGR, vol 98, Jul 1944, p 281. " --for the supposed
marriage of Joane Drake to Thomas 2 Randall (Robert 1). Weymouth Vital
Records (1910), a compilation of the Town Records, does not show such a
marriage; neither is there a record of the birth of a son, Thomas3 Randall on
Mar. 12, 1659--.")-- "It is true that Thomas 1 Drake of Weymouth had a sister
Elizabeth who married Ezekiel Hamlin of Boston.---'will of Ezekiel---mentions
"my brother Thomas Drake of Weymouth". (Suffolk County Probate 8:4) But
documentary evidence of the reputed sister Joane has not been found."
From: New England Marriages Prior to 1700. by Clarence A. Torrey. 1,009 pp.,
indexed. (1985), repr. Baltimore, MD, 1994. This data is from the reprint
dated 1987. The below is exactly as listed.
RANDALL, Thomas (-1711) & 1/wf Joan {Drake} ? (1628-); b1659; Weymouth
>From pp xv of the above New England Marriages:
"Question marks alongside any data indicate doubt, of course"
The above is obvious for Thomas Randall's marriage listing by Torrey. Later
data from public records could change that listed of course, and would be
most welcome, however, as Joan/Joane is not my direct straight line ancestor,
this is the last information I will list on her. Future updates will be only
on Thomas Drake and his sister, Elizabeth .
William Drake of Yardbury`s will of 1635 proved 1639, speaks of four
daughters and four sons. Colyton registers show the daughters as Dorothy,
Jane, Eleanor and Elizabeth, and the sons, William John Endimian and Thomas.
There were no other children.
Research in England is continuing to find the home of Thomas Drake of
Weymouth, MA.
If any researchers have English Drake or Hamlin data to update that above, I
would greatly appreciate the information sent to me at my email below.
Copies of documents highly desired, but preferably LDS film numbers with the
below listed data.
A. Suffolk Co. Mass, Court File no. 1689, dated Mar. 7, 1677/78 on Thomas
Drake.
B. Suffolk County Probate 8:4, will of Ezekiel Hamlin.
C. Weymouth Vital Records (1910), pps showing marriage of Joane Drake to
Thomas
(2) Randall (Robert 1), or Joane Drake marrying anyone.
D. Suffolk County Probate, 13: 54, 55, estate of Thomas Drake.
Copying costs and postage will be most happily reimbursed.
PLEASE do not send any attachments to my email address! I have no ancestral
data on descendants of Thomas Drake except my own 4 generation direct
ancestors. All I'm interested in is finding the English home of Thomas Drake
of Weymouth.
Enjoy the information.
