He was educated at Invercargill and afterwards worked on his fathers farm in the Kapuka district. In 1880 he took up land and started farming on his own account in the Kapuka district and then bought his traction engine and plant. His property consisted of 234 acres of open land in addition to a bush section of 87 acres.He was a member of the local school committee for seven years.
