Dear Roy:
For many years the rumor has been passed down that my family has direct lineage to Sir Francis Drake. This supposed link is on my father's side, the Whiteheads, English ship builders most of whom were lost in the Irish Sea. My son just turned 6 and he loves anything pirate oriented ( I haven't explained the difference between pirate and privateer as of yet) It would be a thrill for all of us if it could be verified. Any guildence you could offer would be appreciated.

Hi Richard and thanks for your message,
the Admiral was married twice but had no children
(possibly illeg ones while on his trips to the Carribean etc).
His brother Thomas had a lineage that supposedly ended
up in the USA but none of this can be proved. I think by
the 17c that there were no male heirs to the Thomas Drake line,

dear roy, this is information from the family bible the honourable anne elizabeth drake,married a member of the gill family, and was mother of my three times great grandfather, james drake gill .native of stonehouse devon england.born at st pancras london,june 22nd 1819,he was related someway through his mother to sir francis drake.regards kaye thiel west australia |

Family oral history states that our ancestors, Elizabeth Drake born 1850, County Down Northern Ireland, and her father, John Drake, born abt 1925, County Down, descend from Sir Francis.
Do you have any ancestral or descendant lineage charts or information that would connect them?

I am trying to find the names of Sir Francis Drake's 12 brothers. I believe my one missing link is one of these 12 brother's. My great grandmother was Florence Hamilton Drake, b.Oct. 10th 1873,in Caradoc,Middlesex,On,Ca.Her father was John Drake,b.1845 in Ca. He was married to Isabella Saxton of Ca. I can pick the line back up at Edmund Drake b.1520, Father to Sir Francis. I've still got this gap from John Drake 1845-Edmund Drake b.1520. I would greatly appreciate any info.All of my family is gone now, so I can't rely on any help there. |

1541 - Edmund, John and Margery's second son, is traditionally said to have begun life as a sailor, and to have been early converted to the Protestant faith. The date of his marriage is believed to have been about the year 1541. It has been supposed that his wife was sister or cousin to William Hawkins; but reccent discoveries shows that her name was Milwaye, and it is just as likely that the relationship, which is known to have existed between the Drake and Hawkins families, may have been through Edmund Drakes's mother as through his wife. (He sold the ship, and entered into the service of his cousins, John and William Hawkins, the enterprising sons of William Hawkins of Plymouth, a seaman much esteemed and beloved of King Henry VIII.) Edmund Drake had twelve children.

Hi
I am not related to Sir Francis Drake, I am building my family tree at the moment, I just found out that Sir Francis Drake was my 2nd cousin's husband's ancestor. I am really confused with this thing with between Edmund and his wife Mylwaye. THEY had 12 kids right? can you put their children in order from eldest to youngest please? which ones died young? I know Captain John Drake was the eldest and Sir Francis was 2nd eldest and Thomas being youngest. But what about other siblings, who was next after Francis?
I am more curious about Sir John Hawkins as it is said he was Francis' cousin. Who Hawkins married to?

Hi again, sorry that I forgot to mention that a William May married a Eleanor Drake b1696 (Sir Francis Drake's great great great niece). William May's great great great niece Dorothy May B1900 married William Cowell B1908. William Cowell was my grandfather's 1st cousin Dorothie Miller's husband Ernest Cowell's cousin. |

Hi Kerry,
The father of Sir Francis Drake was Edmund Drake (c.1517-<16th Jan 1567). His wife was surnamed 'Mylwaye' (Melwaye or Mylawe) and her first name was unknown, but possibly Mary or Anna. Some accounts suggested a total of 12 sons some of whom died in infancy.
Of those known were the following:
1) Sir Francis Drake (c.1540-28th Jan 1596)
2) Edward Drake (c.1546-<1566)
3) John Drake (c.1546-Oct 1572)
4) Joseph Drake (c.1547-Jan 1573)
5) Thomas Drake (14th Apr 1556-4th Apr 1606)
Supposedly, Sir Francis Drake's paternal grandmother, Margery, was a Hawkins.

Our family history is documented to Robert Drake, who settled in New Hampshire and whose son was Francis Drake who married Mary Walker. This is the Francis Drake who was born about 1620 in New Hampshire and died in Piscataway, NJ in 1687. The parents of the above mentioned Robert Drake who settled in New Hampshire are William Drake and Joan Merrylls from England. It is thought that William Drake's father is Thomas Drake, brother of Sir Francis Drake, but not so sure about that. The above mentioned Francis Drake had a son, George Drake (~1650-1709)and married Mary Oliver. They had a son, Jonathon Drake (b~1689)who married Mary Clawson (1715) and had a daughter Mary Drake (b~1720) who married Mordecai Bevan in 1741 in Philadephia. Do you have any feedback on this lineage? |

My gran was a Drake. The earliest I can trace back to is George Drake B:1813, who married Eliza Lemon B:1814. Both born in Ireland (Antrim poss). They married at St. Patricks in Belfast,May 1832.Their son was William Drake :1833 Belfast D:191 Lancashire married to Eliza McCauley B:1833 Belfast and died 1886 Lancashire. My gran said they descended from Thomas - Sir Francis brother. I have read that the male line died out though. I can't trace George Drake or his wife Eliza Lemon back any further- I believe the Irish records were destroyed. If anyone has any information I would be very grateful. |
