DRAKE / MAILLARD Ref. previous posts of Dec 2000 & May 2010. My interest is in the MAILLARD family of Guernsey, Channel Islands and I have details together with some memorabilia of their line going back to around mid C18th. There is a family tradition alleging a connection with the DRAKEs. My late cousin, Lillian Maillard, produced a tree but was of the opinion that John, the son of FRANCIS MAILLARD, and b. early C19th, had caused confusion and started the rumour by anglicising the family surname to DRAKE for one generation. She found no direct link between the two families. With the MAILLARDs being Huguenots, refugees once resident in France, and with Sir FRANCIS DRAKE dying without any known issue, this seems to be a reasonable conclusion. I have an open mind. I would be delighted hear from anyone who can confirm or refute this opinion. (admin has email add) |
