Wednesday, 23 May 2012 3:49 PM Hi Roy, Thank you for getting back to me. My basic lineage is this: My EKA is John Thomas Drake born Chatham, kent, england between 1816-1821 (1841 census and will put him at 1816, the other census say approx 1821, but all say chatham) I have him on the census but cannot find a birth certificate for him. He married Elizabeth Major Raynor on Nov 1st 1838 in Dover, Kent. They had five children: Mary Major Susannah Drake 1843,died april 1868 John Formage Drake approx 1844-1879 died in kent Charles Edward Drake 1847 Stephen Butcher Drake May 31 1849 (my gggrandfather) died jan 5 1910 kent Elizabeth Drake 1853 all born in Dover. They all lived in the custom house quay at the pavillion hotel. John Thomas Drake was the landlord. In the 51, and the 61 he lists his occupation as a mariner. I cannot find him or his wife on the 1841. I wonder if he was at sea? I dont know where to look for that because i haven't been able to locate his birth certificate. I also have found his will for aug 8 1891 when he died in the pavillion hotel. My ggrandfather Stephen butcher is listed on the census as an engine fitter for steamships. his whole family appears to have stayed around the dover area until he. After he died his wife Jemima Mercy Neeves 1852 rye sussex, died july 22 1916 brantford ontario canada. (whom he married in dover in 1875), left with the two youngest children to brantford ontario canada. Stephen Butcher and Jemima Mercy had 8 children. They were Alice 1877 charles ernest mar 1879 mabel edith m mar 1881 lillian elizabeth 1883 John Fredrick 1885 (who immigrated to brantford ontario canada first in 1910) died dec 1955 brantford william henry drake 1887 died 1918 in ww1 hilda florence 1891 died brantford ontario Albert Edward 1893 (my ggrandfather) died aug 30 1951 in brantford ontario During their time in england they all also lived at the custom house quay. I hope this is what you were wanting. I got most of the info from ancestry.com. Aside from the website link i sent to you already. I was just lucky to stumble across it. it's amazing that someone out there is finding all these old stories and publishing them again. It seems the family is always around the sea somehow. I am hoping someone out there may help me find johns birth certificate. perhaps he was illigitimate? on the marriage between john thomas and elizabeth major it only lists his father as john. no mother, and no last name for this john. i did find however a marriage for a john drake and an Ann butcher in 1818- two years after he was supposed to be born, but maybe his dad was away at sea? and anns last name may explain why the middle name butcher shows up through the family. this family in later generations uses the mothers, or grandmothers maiden name as a middle name. if i can just close this gap i can find out just which family of drakes i am from. So far all my drakes are from dover, except john thomas who was born in chatham. listing this may help me find that missing link. without dna, i dont know what else to do. Thank you for posting my lineage. This weekend I’ll add a Kent section to the website and the discussion forum. Shame your Dad wont do a DNA test! Great reading on your website as well. Maybe when you get a chance send me basic lineage John Thomas Drake and I’ll add that as well. Have you backtracked any of your Drakes back to Devon or Somerset?? Do you want your email published as well – thought I better check. Thanks for getting in contact, Regards, Roy From: Ang Drake <gnaang@hotmail.com <http://gnaang%40hotmail.com> > Date: Fri, 20 Apr 2012 21:38:19 -0700 To: Roy Andrews <roy@xroyvision.com.au <http://roy%40xroyvision.com.au> > Subject: Drake in Kent, Dover, England I am writing because i check your website regulary in my search for earlier drake ancestors. I am related to John Thomas Drake, who was the inn keeper at the Pavillion Hotel in Folkestone, Kent, England. He lived with his family at the custom house quay on the waterfront. Here is some info written about him. http://www.dover-kent.com/Pavilion-Hotel.html He was also, (it says in one article) a ship owner. He is my great great great grandfather. I would like to know more about him and I would also like to see info about him on your website in hopes that i can discover more about my family. I cannot find a birth certificate for him. He was born abt 1816 in Chatham. He married Elizabeth major Rayner in 1838. My line follows his son Stephan butcher Drake, his son albert edward drake (who immigrated (1911 census)to brantford ontario to join his brother john) whose son was ernest charles drake who was my grandfather. Could you please add a kent section to your database of english drakes? I am hoping it will help me bridge the gap to some of the older drake records on your website. My dad will not take a dna test and aside from cousins i dont know, there is no male drakes left in my line. I can send you more info if it would help, please just tell me what to send. thank you so very much. Sincerely, From Angela Drake |
