Dear Roy,
I posted information about John Jackman Drake on Discus the Drake roll call today.He had an illegitimate son (his only child) who emigrated to Australia in the 19th century and has about 300 descendants in Australia.John Jackman Drake's house in Crediton(called Winswood) still stands-we have visited it.I would love to hear from you.

Thanks very much for contacting me re the Drake family.
Very rare finding another researcher with a history of the Drakes in Australia.
My Drakes migrated to Melbourne in c1856 and by 1860 were in the Hunter Valley, Singleton district.
Edward Drake had 9 children, 7 being girls - there are no males descendents now as mainly girls.
Have got this Drake line back to about 1600 with documentation. Anyway I can help you out Peter,

it would appear that my greatgrandfather John Drake came to Melbourne at a similar time to your family.In fact his son Edwin was born on the ship.He had 9 children,Edwin 1856-1922,Harriet 1858-1860,Francis John Drake 1860-1929 (my grandfather a surgeon then a TB specialist),Edith Drake 1862-1941,John Roberts Drake 1865-1946,Lucy Drake 1867-1923,Florence Drake 1869-1931,Frederick Drake 1872-1968,and Percy Drake 1877-1878.
Actually,all this research was done by a John Drake of 36 Hardwicke St,Balwyn in the early 1990's.He sent us a family tree.I have always been interested in the family but have not done any personal research.My interest was reawakened by an article about the Duke of Wellesley,John Churchill.His mother was Elizabeth Drake of Ashe House in Devon.Any connection with your lot?If so,you are related to Winston Churchill!
I would be interested in your family tree to 1600 to see if there are any links.Where did your Drake who emigrated live in England?

1.My earliest ancestor is John Drake born 15?? in Devon ,UK and died in 16??
John's three known children were Thomas, John and Mark ( d 1632).
I descend 14 generations down from Mark Drake.
Some of the Drake villages were Teignmouth,
Churchstanton, Braunton and Yarcombe.
The Australian branch was established when my 2x great,
Edward Drake migrated to Australia in about 1854.

the property containing by estimation 60 acres on the parish of Broomfeilde in the County of Somerset".
He and his sons Mark, John and Thomas granted the said property to John Stawell, Esq,, and his heirs.
Since, John (afterwards Sir John) had some connection with High Ham in Somerset, where the parish registers
show there was a long-established family of Drake, it is possible that John Drake came from High Ham
and that Mark Drake was born there. At present no baptismal entry has been found for him. It seems probable, however,
that he was born about the end of the 16th century. (It is likely that John's three sons,had all to be over 18
to be parties to the deed quoted above).
He removed to Churchstanton, possibly about 1630, but at any rate before 1641 when he signed the Protestation
Roll for the parish, and is also referred to at " of Churchstanton" in the entry in Pitminister Parish Register
which records his marriage there, on 24th January, 1641, to Grace Babb of Pitminister..

MARK DRAKE died 1632. He married DOROTHY
split 120 pounds between his wife and children, Mark ( generation 3) received the
remainder which I don't know how much that was at the moment.
Not knowing how old Mark was when he died in 1632, he at least had 5
children,
son Mark ( married 1641) received remainder of estate.
Jonathan 20 pound when 24yrs
Maria 20 pound within 2 yrs of fathers death.
Lydia 20 pound within 3 yrs of fathers death.
Marye 20 pound when 21 years old.

I
have quite a few Churchstanton Drakes that moved to that area.
The Drakes of Churchstanton
were founded by one Mark Drake who died in 1632. Where Mark came from is the real question.
One clue is the record of the sale in 1619 of land called Buncombe in the parish of Broomfield, Soms.,
by John Drake Senr. along with his (apparent) sons Mark, John Junr., and Thomas.
The property was sold to John Stawell, Esq.
With my Drakes, the pedigree takes me back to circa 1590 with Mark Drake
being born and by 1641 living at Churchstanton on the Devon/Somerset border.
His father was John Drake and every second Drake was named John. There must
have been hundreds of John Drakes around the UK and in that area.

I don't know which John Drake is the father of my Mark Drake. But I have Mark Drakes' will dated 1632
and he had a fair bit of money.

Dear Roy,
a bit of a coincidence.My greatgrandfather,John Drake married Anne Roberts of Cheriton Fitzpayne,Devon on 18/7/1855.Similar name.Both emigrated to Melbourne at a similar time.As far as John Drakes go, the family legend is that we are descended from John Drake,brother of Sir Francis.The more I investigate,the less I believe this because there are so many Drakes around at that time.

Dear Roy,
while investigating my Drakes I have checked Charity Jackman mother of John Jackman Drake and it appears that the Jackmans' came from around Teignmouth as did Henry Drake your ancestor.Interesting links -she was born in 1767 and died in 1834.
