I am constantly researching our family legend that we can trace our family back to Sir Francis Drake. I realise that he was married twice and had no children, but I can't leave it there. My great great great grandfather John L Towning received a letter dated 24 July 1851 from a solicitor called Winslow Jones confirming that John Towning's name had been registered on the list of the RElations of the Founder (being Sir Francis Drake). In know that my Great Aunt Jane ( Sarah Towning) also looked into this link and again it was confirmed that there was a link, though only through a female line and therefore of not much significance.
My own thinking was that if it were the female line then it was likely to beginning looking at John Townings mother, Luisa Hopping. Luisa was the daughter of Ann Letton (known as Nancy) who married Edward Hopping, both of whom went to sea along with her brother William. They served on HMS Crescent a 74-gun Orion under Rear Admiral Sir James Samarez. Ann and Edward were both present at the Battle of St Vincent and The Nile where Ann served as a powder monkey (although she was actually a seamtress). Ann remained at sea until Edward died and later married to John Perriam - it is for some reason that Ann is most famous as Nancy Perriam, although she was Ann Hopping all through her 'naval career'.
Ann's mother was Ann Waldron married to William Letton and Ann Waldron's mother was Ann Roe, who I am pretty sure was married to Richard Waldron.
I am hoping that somehow I can link Ann Roe back through to a sister (maybe?) of Sir Francis Drake.
I have spent many hours looking for this link, but to no avail.
